Tour Description:
This is the ultimate ‘introductory’ tour of the Highlands, which takes you to some of the main historical sights as well some places of amazing natural beauty!
We start off in Inverness where there is a chance to find out about the fascinating history of this historic city before heading up to the Culloden Battlefield, a place where so many Highlanders (including our ancestors) came to a bloody end over 250 years ago.
Our next stop is Clava Cairns, a fascinating 4000 year old burial ground. Our tour then takes us past the beautifully crafted Culloden railway viaduct before winding down a country road to Cawdor Castle of MacBeth fame (although MacBeth never lived here!). After exploring this magnificent 16th Century Castle and gardens (keep an eye out for Lady Cawdor who still lives here!) we venture down country lanes to Doulsie Bridge and the River Findhorn where there is always a chance of seeing a salmon leaping in the most stunning of settings.
Our journey then takes us across the wild Dava Moor, a fantastic area of exceptional natural beauty and we cross into the Cairngorm National Park where we get great views of some of Scotland’s highest mountains. A quick detour takes us to Lochindorb Castle, which is one of the most remote castles in the country before heading to Carrbrige to wonder at it’s magnificent 300 year old bridge!
For those in need of a dram, the Tomatin Whisky distillery is next on our agenda where we find out about the process of making whisky then get to taste the real thing! We then drive through some more stunning Highland scenery, passing charming lochs, Highlands cows and rolling hills en-route before ending up at Dores to take in one of our favourite views of the world famous Loch Ness plus if you are lucky you will get to meet Steve, a real life Nessie hunter! On the way back we can stop in at James Pringle Wollen Mill, once home to a working mill but now a great place to pick up a souvenir of your trip to Scotland!
