Tour Theme: Historic and Cultural Tours
This tour starts from: Edinburgh or Glasgow
Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights
This is a Private Tour
Enjoy a 3 day private tour to the Magical Isle of Skye. On this tailor made tour we will travel through the Scottish Highlands to get to Skye. Each day is a full day of guiding but as this is a personal tour we will go at your own pace. There are a few different options to travel each day so the tour will be customized to your interests. Below is a suggested itinerary…
Day 1: Today is a long journey up through the Highlands to get to Skye. It will take from 8 to 10 hours so we should try for an early start.
Departing Edinburgh we first travel through the central belt passing by the mighty Stirling Castle. Sitting in the centre of Scotland it has seen some of the country’s most important historical events. Crossing over the Spittal Bridge we have great views of Doune Castle; famously used in films and TV such as Monty Python and Outlander. Coffee stop at Kilmahog Woolen Mill or Deanston Distillery Bothy.
We are officially now in the Highlands! Passing through some of Scotand’s most iconic scenery; the desolate moorlands of Ranoch Moor and Glencoe. A very historic region, home to Clan MacDonald and a horrific massacre in 1692. Also used in movies including Bollywood’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and James Bond: Skyfall. Lunch will be in Fort William, Scotland’s outdoor adventure capital.
After lunch we then go to Glenfinnan where we will stop for a photo stop of the Glenfinan Viaduct, the bridge used in Harry Potter for Hogwarts. On the banks of Loch Sheil this is where Bonnie Prince Charlie gathered the clans for the 1745 Jacobite uprising. Finally reaching the port town of Mallaig to take a short ferry to Skye (note this is seasonal and optional, itinerary can be adjusted).
Overnight will be in Broadford, Portree or Kyleakin
Day 2: This is a full day of discovering the Misty Isle with lots of options for places to visit. We will not be able to see all of the below but these are some options. You can discuss these options with your guide when on tour…
Northern Skye landscapes and geological formations make you feel as if you are on another planet. With some of the oldest rock in the world you will be walking in the footsteps of the dinosaurs. Take a journey up to the Trotternish Peninsula with some great photographic opportunities, places like Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and The Quiraing.
The Museum of Island Life has a display of thatched cottages as they would have been up to the 18th century. Not far is Kilmuir Cemetery, the resting place of Flora MacDonald who aided Bonnie Prince Charlie to escape the government troops over the Sea to Skye. Uig is a pretty horseshoe shaped bay where the ferries depart for the Outer Hebrides. For those with an adventurous imagination we can visit the Fairy Glen (not with coaches).
Dunvegan Castle in Waternish is one of the most continuously in habited castles in Scotland. It has been a stronghold for the Chiefs of Macleod for nearly 800 years. In the town of Dunvegan is the Giant Macaskill Museum, the past home to a real life giant of 7ft9, see the special made furniture on display.
For those whisky lovers there is also an opportunity to visit Talisker Distillery. Similar to other island whiskies peat is used to give a smoky fiery flavour.
Overnight will be in Broadford, Portree or Kyleakin (option to customise tour and have the 2nd overnight on the shores of Loch Ness)
Day 3: Before heading off the island we will stop in the picturesque town of Kyleakin. A great photo stop for the Skye Bridge and Castle Moil. Old home of Saucy Mary who thanked toll payers by flashing them!
Next we stop at Eilean Donan Castle. Home to the Clan Mackenzie it is one of the world’s most photographed castles. Even though the current building is from the 20th century it sits in the same spots as the previous castles and most of the stones are from them. It was also used in the Highlander movie. Here we have the option for just a photo stop or a visit.
This day is a long journey back to Edinburgh but packed with scenery. We will make a stop at Loch Ness in hopes to meet it’s most famous resident monster affectionately named Nessie. Here we have the option of a boat ride if you did not visit Eilean Donan Castle, or just some time by the water.
As we journey through the Cairngorm Mountains we head towards Pitlochry; a pretty Victorian village on the banks of River Tummel. The last stop will be at South Queensferry for views of the magnificent Forth Bridges. Reaching Edinburgh about 6.30-7pm
Note there is also an option to start or end in Glasgow. Itinerary will be slightly altered. Enquire for details.
