A once in a lifetime experience at a Scottish Highland Games; from tossing the caber, putting the shot and throwing the hammer, to the skirl of bagpipes and the twirl of kilts... you'll see and hear them all.
Originally an athletic contest between Clans dating back over 900 years, Highland Games (or Gatherings) are a fantastic spectacle and highlights include Highland dancing, pipe band displays, hammer throwing, tug-of-war, wrestling and, of course, tossing the caber.
There are several events in the Highland Games calendar, and we have created a range of day tours based around these spectacular cultural events including the best of our beautiful landscape. Each has its own local charm and character. Our programme includes a visit to the world famous Braemar Gathering.
Known as 'The Games', and originating from those believed to have been held by Malcolm III in the 11th Century, an annual Highland Games Gathering is held at Braemar in Royal Deeside on the first Saturday in September. The Gathering is one of the most famous and has Her Majesty the Queen as patron. Members of the Royal Family have traditionally been spectators since Queen Victoria attended in 1848.
