This tour takes you away to a Scottish island paradise. Stunning scenery, ancient history, traditional culture and 8 of Scotland’s finest whisky distilleries... what more can you ask for?
Day 1: EDINBURGH - ISLAY
Tour departs from Edinburgh at 0800 and from Glasgow at 0830
A unique distillery...
After departing Edinburgh or Glasgow, your first stop will be the wonderful Deanston Distillery. There is time to sample some delicious handmade treats in their coffee shop, followed by a tour of the distillery and a chance to have a sample or two.
North and west to Oban...
You now journey north into the Highlands across an ancient fault line. As the landscape changes and becomes more mountainous, your guide will unfold the history and culture of this stunning part of Scotland. Heading further west, you pass Loch Awe (the longest loch in Scotland) and into Argyllshire. With some great stops along the way, you will arrive in the Victorian town of Oban in time for lunch and some exploring. This is the seafood capital of Scotland so make sure you make the most of it. Nom, nom, nom...
To the ferry...
Turning south, your tour now takes you through the ancient neolithic landscapes of Kilmartin Glen. There are hundreds of ancient monuments and historic sites covering at least the last 5000 years in this region. After time to explore some of these, you now take the short drive down the Kintyre Peninsula to Kennacraig where you will board the evening ferry to Islay.
A whisky paradise...
The ferry crossing is around 2 hours and allows for some beautiful views of the islands of Gigha, Jura and Islay as well as the area surrounding West Loch Tarbert. There is time to relax in the bar with an Islay whisky; grab some dinner from the restaurant and just soak up the sea air before you arrive. On arrival into Port Ellen or Port Askaig is is then just a short drive to Bowmore to check in to The Bowmore House for your 3 night stay. Welcome to the wonderful Isle of Islay.
Day 2 & 3: TWO FULL DAYS EXPLORING ISLAY
The Queen of the Hebrides...
With 2 full days to explore the island, our tour has a relaxed pace and flexible itinerary. There are plenty of options for sightseeing and exploring and your guide will certainly share some of their favourite places with you. These can include empty beaches, whitewashed villages, ancient sites, the Kildalton Cross, medieval strongholds, fresh seafood, local wildlife and traditional cultures.
Lets face it, whisky is the real reason you are visiting Islay though. With only around 3000 people and 8 world class distilleries, the chances of finding a ‘wee dram’ are pretty good. The distillery and whisky experiences we have arranged for you will give you a varied and interesting insight into the world of Islay’s most famous export. We don’t want to give too much away BUT... after a warehouse experience at Lagavulin, lunch and a tour at Ardbeg and a look at the Laphroaig maltings we think you will enjoy your first day on Islay.
Your second day is no less exciting. A private tour of Bruichladdich, a chance to gaze over the Sound of Jura from the Bunnahabhain and a behind the scenes peek at the independan Kilchoman all make this a great experience.
At the end of the day...
Each night on Islay there are plenty of options for eating, drinking, photographing, relaxing, chatting, meeting the locals or just watching the world go by. Your tour guide will let you know all the best places to get the most out of your time in Bowmore. There is an eating option for all budgets and tastes and with so much local produce on offer you will be spoilt for choice. The whisky bars aren’t too bad either... Slainte Mhath, as they say in Gaelic.
Day 4: ISLAY - EDINBURGH
After a final hearty breakfast of local produce, you catch the morning ferry (not too early though so don’t worry) back to Kennacraig. Once you arrive on the mainland again, your tour takes you north to the loch-side town of Inveraray. This is the seat of the clan Campbell, home to the Loch Fyne Whisky shop and your stop for lunch.
Still lots to see...
After lunch (and some last minute whisky shopping) your journey now hugs the shores of Loch Fyne and Loch Long before climbing up to the Rest and be Thankful pass. Taking in the sweeping views, it is easy to imagine how tough the cattle drivers and Highlanders that once rested here on their way to and from the Lowlands. Another short drive brings you to the shores of Loch Lomond. With time to stop for some lovely views and stretch of the legs, this is the last stop on your tour.
Where did all the people come from...?
Your minibus will now cross the majestic River Clyde as you head into Scotland’s largest city of Glasgow. Some of our guests may be leaving the tour here so we may make a short stop in central Glasgow (George Square). Then it is a short drive back to Edinburgh to say farewell to the remainder of our guests. We hope you will have had a great time with us and made some new friends along the way.
