Tour Description:
Perthshire straddles both the Highlands and Lowlands and has the greatest variety of scenery and history of any county in Scotland. The county is split into several distinct regions: Strathearn - a fertile valley of rolling hills and flat arable lands; the Trossachs - a region of low, forested mountains interspersed by serene lakes and rivers, a very beautiful land of contrasts; Breadalbane - a tough knot of mountains, culminating in the 3984ft Ben Lawers, and including beautiful and dark Loch Tay; Atholl - an ancient province including the wide and fertile valleys of Tay and Tummel as well as the mountainous regions of Rannoch and the Forest of Atholl; Strathmore - a wide valley of rolling arable fields between the Highlands and the Sidlaw hills;
Carse of Gowrie - one of the most fertile areas in Scotland, skirting the northern shore of the Firth of Tay between Perth and Dundee. The area is full of both royal and clan history, as well as being pivotal in the Jacobite wars.
From Edinburgh the tour heads north to Pitlochry and a visit to either Blair Athol or Edradour distilleries. Both produce sweet, rich malts, although Blair Athol has a nutty finish while Edradour comes across quite malty and spicy. Then it is north to Blair Castle, seat of the Dukes of Atholl, chiefs of the Clan Murray. The duke is the last person left in Europe with the right to raise his own private army - the Atholl Highlanders. The castle was central to the early Jacobite rising in 1689, when it was defended by the men of Atholl (including the Robertsons and Stewarts) and John Graham of Claverhouse
(Bonnie Dundee), and was the last castle to be seiged as the Murrays tore themselves apart over loyalties to the crown. From Blair we head west to Aberfeldy for a tour of Aberfeldy distillery (Dewar’s World of Whisky). Aberfeldy was established by the local born whisky baron John Dewar and produces a typically sweet Perthshire whisky, but with a hint of peat. We then cross over the hills, with spectacular views over the south central Highlands and down to Dunkeld and a forest walk at the Hermitage. And then it is back to Edinburgh.
