Tour Description

Come and experience Scotland's Water of Life - single malt Scotch Whisky - with visits to two fascinating distilleries situated right on the edge of the Highlands. In between these visits enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Loch Lomond National park.
This tour is for lovers of Scotch single malt whisky and for those who would like to know more about our national drink.

Departing 09.30 from Edinburgh you travel west past Stirling and along the valley of the River Forth with the Campsie Fells on one side and the mountains of the southern Highlands on the other. Along the way your guide will set the scene, telling you stories of Scottish history, myth and legend and introducing you to the subject of the day – Scotch Whisky.

On arriving at the first distillery of the day, Glengoyne, make sure to take time for photos of the attractive buildings nestled below the rugged hillside of Dumgoyne. The volcanic rocks of this hill are the source for the water used in the whisky making process here along with the highest quality unpeated barley. Glengoyne has the slowest distillation process of any distillery in the world and produces a range of single malts full of fresh, bright, subtle but complex flavours. We have reserved places for you on the Wee Tasting tour which includes tastings of the 12 and fabulous 18 year old. Additional whiskies can be sampled in the shop afterwards.

From Glengoyne it is a short drive to the shores of Loch Lomond in the heart of the National Park. Here you will have free time for lunch in a lochside pub where you will also have the opportunity to sample locally produced ales. To work off your lunch we recommend the short climb up to a fabulous viewpoint above the loch – don't forget your camera. Then the tour continues along the edge of the Highlands to the little village of Deanston on the banks for the River Teith.

Deanston Distillery is unique in many ways – it started life as a cotton mill which supported the whole village. When the mill closed in the 1960’s it was converted to a distillery and the building is once again at the heart of the community. The cool humid conditions of the old weaving sheds are now the perfect location for slow maturation of the whisky. It is also the greenest distillery in the country generating all its own power needs through hydroelectric generators using the original mill water supply. Deanston is one of the distilleries which does not chill-filter any of its products adding extra flavours to its unique nutty, malty whiskies. The tour here is fascinating and ends with tastings of two whiskies from the range. After time to browse and perhaps sample some of the other whiskies it is time to depart for the return journey to Edinburgh.

You will we returned to Waterloo Place for approximately 18.00.

Please note: Entry and tasting fees at the distilleries are NOT included in the price to give you more choice and the options of extra tastings on the day. Allow approximately £20 for the tours and tastings
