Tour Description

If you only have a short time in Scotland this 2 day tour will show you the best of the Central Highlands. We travel through the highlands to reach the famous Loch Ness, with plenty of time to go monster hunting. This tour can be tailor made to your preferences, below is an example itinerary with options…

Day 1: Departing Edinburgh we first travel through the central belt passing by the mighty Stirling Castle. Sitting in the centre of Scotland it has seen some of the country’s most important historical events. Crossing over the Spittal Bridge we have great views of Doune Castle; famously used in films and TV such as Monty Python and Outlander.

We are officially now in the Highlands! Passing through some of Scotand’s most iconic scenery; the desolate moorlands of Ranoch Moor and Glencoe. A very historic region, home to Clan MacDonald and a horrific massacre in 1692. Also used in movies including Bollywood’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and James Bond: Skyfall. Lunch will be in Fort William, Scotland’s outdoor adventure capital.

After we will have a chance to explore the ruins of Inverlochy Castle; the origins of this historic town. Then as an option we can go to the Nevis Range. Part of the Nevis Mountain Range which includes Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland. The gondola takes you to the peak for some spectacular views. This option requires at least 2 hours 30 minutes.

The final stop for this day is at Fort Augustus. Sitting at the head of Loch Ness this is where we will stay overnight. Giving you plenty of time to get acquainted with the surroundings and a chance to hunt Nessie. There are evening cruises available in the summer time.

Day 2: Loch Ness is part of the Great Glen, a natural fault line connected 5 lochs from Fort William to Inverness. These lochs are joined by the Caledonian Canal, a great piece of British engineering built in the 19th century. Loch Ness is not the deepest in Scotland but hold the most volume of water, and is said to have a monster lurking its waters.

This morning there will be a few options to explore Loch Ness. 1. An hour cruise from Fort Augustus on ships with sonars to hunt the monster, 2. Visit Urquhart Castle with or without 30min cruise of loch, 3. Visit Loch Ness Exhibition Centre and learn all about the research of Nessie, 4. Drive along the loch to spend more time in Inverness or go to Culloden Battlefield.

Inverness is the capital of the highlands sitting on the River Ness. A city full of history and interesting buildings. Although the current castle has only been there since 1836, there has been previous castles here for about 1500 years. Relating to such historical characters as MacBeth and Mary Queen of Scots.

We then make our journey through the Cairngorm Mountains we head towards Pitlochry; a pretty Victorian village on the banks of River Tummel. The last stop will be at South Queensferry for views of the magnificent Forth Bridges. Reaching Edinburgh about 6.30-7pm

Note there is also an option to start or end in Glasgow. Itinerary will be slightly altered. Enquire for details.
