Tour Description

Enjoy a private tour of Walter Scott's beloved Scottish Borders. The famous novelist of the 19th century that romanticized the highlands and made the world look at Scotland in a different way. He wrote such great books as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.

On this tour from Edinburgh we first head to Scott's View which is said to have been Walter's favourite scenic viewpoint in Scotland. The Eildon Hills which dominate the backdrop was the Trimontium Camp used by the Romans on their northern campaign. On the foreground is the River Tweed which is a popular sport for salmon fishing. It is said that on Walter Scott's funeral procession to nearby Dryburgh Abbey his horses automatically stopped to enjoy the view.

We then continue our tour of the Scottish Borders and go to Melrose Abbey. Originally built in the 1100s, this was once one of Scotland's greatest abbeys. Home to a large community of monks we can see the cloisters and imagine what their life was like. It now sits in ruins as it was often used as the borders were often used as a target during the Wars of Independence. Robert the Bruce's heart is buried in the chapter house. Walter Scott aided in restoring the abbey in the a romantic ruin.

Next is the highlight of the day, Abbotsford House, the home built by Walter Scott in 1824 in Scottish Baronial Style. Inside you will see the writing desk in which Walter wrote the majority of his works. His collection of Scottish artefacts include Key used to imprison Mary Queen of Scot's, Rob Roy's Gun and Montrose's Sword. Other highlights are the large library, a collection of ancient furniture, arms and armour, and more. Enjoy an audio tour from Walter Scott himself. After you have the option for lunch in the restaurant of the visitor's centre.

At the end of the day we give you the option to go to Rosslyn Chapel, Glenkinchie Distillery or go back to Edinburgh
