Tour Description
On this private tour we are offering a short break from Inverness to the Outer Hebrides. This will give you a short glimpse of the Isle of Harris and Lewis. This tour includes the main highlights of the island including Harris Tweed, sandy beaches, Callanish Standing Stones, Dun Carloway Broach and Arnol Blackhouses. This tour can be customized to your request, below is a suggested 2 day Outer Hebrides tour...
Day 1 From Inverness we go directly to the ferry port in Ullapool. On our way we will pass through the Summer Isles which is a holiday destination for the Royal Family. Keep an eye out for some Sealife as well.
On arrival we will drive across the mountainous landscape of Loch Seaforth which separates Lewis from Harris. At Tarbert you will have a chance to buy some Harris Tweed, the only textile with a Parliamentary Act. Nearby is the Harris Distillery which produces a popular gin with a unique rap around bottle.
After we then go see the beach of Luskintyre with its white sandy beach and blue water. The island just opposite was used in the TV series Castaway 2000. If you still have some energy we can go to the medieval St Celement's Church. After we drive back to Lewis and Stornoway for the evening.
Day 2 This morning we go to the highlight of the trip the 4500 year old Calanais Standing Stones. There are 33 tall stones in total forming an alley to the ceremonial circle. It is said to reflect the lunar year, on summer solstice the moon appears to dance on the ridge. It was featured in the animated Pixar movie Brave.
Our next stop of the day is Dun Carloway Broch. Built in the 1st century it has thick double walls for defense and warmth. Involved in clan warfare in the 1500s when the Morrisons attacked the MacCuleys.
Then we will see the Arnol Blackhouses and see how islanders lived in the 19th century. Both animals and humans lived in the stone houses together.
If time we will take a break at Lews Castle, which has recently been reopened to the public. It gives a great opportunity for a walk of the harbour before taking the return ferry back to the mainland to drive to Inverness.
