Tour Description

Go Scotland Tours are offering this half day Private Tour to Stirling Castle from Edinburgh and the cruise ports of South Queensferry, Rosyth and Leith. A short day out to the inspiring Stirling Castle, an attraction in Scotland not to be missed.

The mighty castle of Stirling has a long interesting history. It is often called the most important place in Scotland as it sits in the centre of the country. If you can take Stirling you can take Scotland. For this reason many battles have been fought here including our well known Scottish Heroes; William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.

As we make our way to the castle esplanade enjoy the great views of the River Forth and National Wallace Monument. Then enjoy a personal guided tour of Stirling Castle with your Qualified Blue Badge Guide. The castle has changed appearances through-out the centuries. In the 1500s King James IV transformed it into a Fairytale Castle with tall towers painted gold that could be seen from miles away. It was a favourite residence for the Stuart destiny including Mary Queen of Scots. Later on becoming a military barracks for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlands until Historic Environment Scotland took over in the 1960s.

The guided tour will take you through the important highlights of the castle such as The Forework, Grand Battery, Chapel Royal, Great Hall and Royal Palace. The spectacular Royal Palace was built by King James V with elaborate statues adorning the exterior. The interior has recently been refurbished to how it would have looked in renaissance times. Don't miss the Stirling Heads and tapestries inside along with the periodically dressed historical actors.

After we can then take a short walk of the Stirling's Old Town. Argyll’s Lodging, a 17th century townhouse situated on the upper approaches to Stirling Castle, its fine architecture marks it out as a property intended for a great nobleman serving the royal court. Also Mar's Wark, Church of the Holy Rude and Old Town Jail. If time permits we will make a short stop at the Bannockburn Visitor's Centre to see the impressive Statue of Robert the Bruce.

In total the tour will take about 4 hours.
